Long War Studios Xcom 2 Mods 8,5/10 586 votes

Long War Studios is at it again. Meet the second and third of an overall set of five XCOM 2 Long War mods that were revealed this past April.

Jan 5, 2017 - Long War Studios has been renamed Pavonis Interactive, and is working on something new.

  • XCOM 2 getting Long War 2 mod. The original Long War mod transformed XCOM: Enemy Unknown into a drastically different game. Not only was it much longer (the name gives that one away, I reckon), it also changed the way you think about your soldiers: encouraging the player to think about their entire roster, rather than individual squads.
  • Jan 17, 2017  We do not expect Long War 2 campaigns to be affected by the release of the War of the Chosen expansion. Players with WotC are able to select a non-expansion version of XCOM 2 to continue playing modded campaigns. 11/7/17 update: We do not expect to update Long War 2 for WotC.

The Long War Perk Pack: Enjoy 70 new or redesigned abilities assignable to your soldiers, gear, and aliens. In addition to that, there’s UI support to allow for three perks per soldier level, takes the four base classes and makes it into seven, and revamps the tactical HUD to have room for more than 14 abilities at a time.

Long War Laser Pack: Newly added laser tier weapons take their place in-between the Magnetic section and Plasma Beam portion of the tech tree. They tend to do one more damage point, compared to the average rate of magnetic attacks. You’ll need to research Elerium technology to gain access to the basic Pulse Laser technology unlocks. But in return you have weapons like the Pulse Stengun and the Pulse Laser SMG available in your arsenal.

You can read the full update via the XCOM 2 website here. The AlienPack is the next one on the schedule of expected releases, with the fifth yet to be announced mod anticipated to arrive sometime after that.

The creators of XCOM: Long War have partnered with Firaxis to create several XCOM 2 mods for its February launch date.

When Long War Studios announced its new game, Terra Invicta, the immediate reaction was crystal clear: 'So you're not making Long War for XCOM 2?' Considering the team's original XCOM: Long War mod was a huge success for Enemy Unknown, the reaction is understandable. But it might be unfounded: In a recent blog post, Firaxis announced a new partnership with Long War Studios, who are producing several XCOM 2 mods that will launch alongside the core game.

Outside of being a great way to get Long War Studios' content into XCOM 2, this is a perfect way to advertise mod support. Firaxis is on the record as saying mod support was a missed opportunity for Enemy Unknown. So what better way to promote the new system than having professionally-made mods available at launch?

The question now is what mods Long War Studios is working on, since Firaxis is saving those details for another announcement. The original XCOM: Long War overhauled almost every element of the core game - increasing your tactical options, granting the alien invaders their own research tree, allowing even more soldiers to participate in missions, and much more. If Long War 2 isn't in the cards, these mods might offer individual components of the original so fans can assemble a custom Long War of their own.

The other option, albeit an unlikely one, is that Long War Studios have been working on an official sequel alongside Firaxis that will be available when XCOM 2 launches in February. But even if we don't get Long War 2 right away, XCOM 2's mod support means we'll probably see something like it soon.
