I recently switched from Comcast to DIRECTV and am disappointed by equally poor customer service and a horrible user experience. I'm a software engineer and recognize a design produced by apathetic programmers. But, before we get to the design, I'd like to mention the lies that convinced me to switch to DIRECTV and trapped me in this two year contract:
We transmit everything in 1080p, not 1080i like Comcast. (100% false)
You can cancel HBO/Cinemax after the 90 day trial and still get HBO/Cinemax on-demand because you are purchasing through Cosco. (100% false)
You will save money over Comcast, even after leaving my internet with Comcast (50MB/s). I save roughly $30/month, but if I added the movie channels back, the cost is roughly the same and the XFinity user experience didn't make my wife angry every time she used it.
Additionally, when I tried to remove the premium channels via the web site, it would not let me. I could upgrade and spend more money, but it appears barriers were in place to discourage users from removing premium channels. This gives me the impression that DIRECTV is willing to sacrifice user experience in an effort to squeeze every extra dollar from the customer.. this greed is one reason I left Comcast.
Secondly, I can't browse my guide without seeing hundreds of channels I don't care about, nor do I have access to (yes, I could configure favorites, but this is a joke). I wouldn't have to use the guide if search worked.. Plus there are advertisements scattered throughout the guide which is already too small to see much. Again, this appears to be sacrificing user experience for greed.
I had high hopes for DIRECTV, but have only been disappointed. I highly recommend the entire management staff read 'How Google Works' for lessons on how to put the user first and build a massive user-base. You have a great opportunity with Comcast being the most hated company in the country. This should be easy for you. Seize the opportunity!
